Goodbye? More Like “See You Later!” Teva’s Boomerang Employees

Two women standing in a forest

For many of us, when we say goodbye to a place we work, that chapter has ended. However, for some, their goodbyes aren’t the end of the story. Meet Teresa Domagala, Scientific Operations Lead, and Virginie Peirs, Senior Director, Regulatory Affairs, whose original farewells to Teva Pharmaceuticals were, in fact, a “see you later”. From reasons including work colleagues, growth opportunities, and simply a feeling of home, read on to learn what brought them back.

Leaving to Learn and Returning to Lead: Teresa’s Tale

When I first began my Teva Pharmaceuticals career in 2006, I never imagined the journey I was beginning. Over 16 years, I progressed from a Research Scientist focusing on cell line development to a Senior Director in Manufacturing Sciences. It’s been a challenging yet fulfilling experience that shaped my career and deepened my passion for science and team building.

Returning to Teva, I found myself a more skilled and well-rounded professional, one equipped with a broader knowledge of pharmaceutical product development and international regulations.

In early 2022, I decided to leave Teva. Post-pandemic, with life in Australia starting to return to normal, I wanted to take some time for myself and finally finish a course I’d been working on for what felt like forever. This course was a way to expand my understanding of the pharmaceutical industry as a whole, and I knew it was so important for my professional growth to take the time away.

However, I was drawn back to the Teva team after only a short time. For a different role, as a Scientific Operations Lead for the Biologics Discovery Team. As cliché as this may sound, returning really felt effortless, and it was as if I’d never left. My colleagues welcomed me back with such warmth and support that I was able to start contributing immediately.

Returning to Teva, I found myself a more skilled and well-rounded professional, one equipped with a broader knowledge of pharmaceutical product development and international regulations. On a personal level, I’d also discovered that my skills were more transferable than I had previously thought, and it taught me that career development doesn't have to be a straight line from where you started.

Today, two years later, I built up the Scientific Operations Team. My focus has shifted from the specific science of cell lines to solving broader challenges across teams. This role requires a strategic and flexible mindset as I work to support and enhance the work of a diverse team. Watching others grow and succeed motivates me every day. Whether it’s seeing a new research assistant master a piece of technology or watching a project move forward, I get a kick out of knowing I’ve contributed to their journey.

Looking back on my career, I’m amazed at how far I’ve come. When I started as a scientist in an academic research institute, career growth seemed almost impossible without a postdoctoral qualification. But at Teva, I found an environment that values hard work and team success, and I’m grateful for mentors and managers who saw my potential and encouraged me to expand my skills and knowledge.

Teva is more than just a workplace to me; it’s where I’ve made lifelong friends across the globe. When I recently traveled to the UK, my first stop was to meet up with a Teva friend I’d only known online! The friendships I’ve made here are truly special, and they made my return to Teva an easy choice.

Looking ahead, I’m focused on helping my team thrive and continuing my own journey of growth. My career at Teva has been anything but ordinary, and I wouldn’t have it any other way.

There’s No Place Like Home: Virginie’s Story

When I returned to Teva, Belgium, in 2021, I knew I was back in a company that offered me much more than just a job. Teva was a familiar face—one I had returned to after experiencing a different position outside.

Reflecting on my career journey, I realize how grateful I am for the opportunities and inspiring leaders I’ve encountered.

As an industrial pharmacist based in a small city near Ghent, my path to Teva has been shaped by diverse experiences. During my time away, I worked for the Generic Trade Association, where my primary responsibilities included advocacy, lobbying, and networking with local health authorities and other key stakeholders.

One of the biggest reasons I returned to Teva was the people. When I came back, I immediately felt welcomed by the team and quickly found myself part again of a network of colleagues who collaborate across different countries and cultures. We share knowledge, best practices, and a commitment to achieving something bigger than ourselves—and we do this all together.

Reflecting on my career journey, I realize how grateful I am for the opportunities and inspiring leaders I’ve encountered. From the start, I focused on doing work that brought me personal satisfaction rather than chasing specific milestones. Teva has supported me in this approach, encouraging growth and development without imposing a rigid path. It is a place where opportunities arise naturally, and I’ve learned to let these moments unfold.

Ultimately, Teva is more than just a company to me; it’s a place where I feel respected, empowered, and part of a collective effort to make the world healthier. As I look to the future, I’m filled with energy and optimism, knowing that our work aligns with my values and the legacy I want to create.
