As a lifelong soccer enthusiast, I spent countless hours sprinting across the field, chasing the ball, and developing my skills. Soccer was more than just a sport; it was my passion and daily dose of endorphins. But life has a way of shifting our paths; when I moved to New York to pursue my MBA, I hung up my soccer boots and found myself yearning for a new athletic challenge.

With my competitive spirit burning, I turned to marathon running. I was captivated by the allure of covering long distances, testing mental and physical limits, and exploring scenic routes throughout Manhattan: Central Park, Brooklyn Bridge, and Riverside Park. It was a fresh start—a chance to redefine my relationship with running.

Lacing up for longer runs was an experience—my first solo run felt both liberating and daunting. I had traded the soccer field for winding trails and my studded boots for cushioned running shoes. During these runs, the sound of my breath and the steady thud of my sneakers against the pavement became my new playlist.

As I began to embrace the "marathon mindset," my patience and persistence increased. I appreciated the slow progress—the incremental gains that accumulate over time. Joining a running club connected me with fellow enthusiasts. We swapped stories, shared tips, and cheered each other on during early morning run drills.

My first marathon was nerve-wracking, not only because it was the first but also because I had no idea what I would go through. Those 42.2 km of the New York Marathon claim the title of the most challenging major marathon globally. The adrenaline surged as I joined more than 50,000 runners at the starting line. The kilometers unfolded—a blur of cheers, water stations, and determination. And then, there it was—the finish line at Central Park. Tears welled as I crossed it, realizing I’d transformed from a soccer player to a marathoner. It was a moment I'll never forget.

I’ve now achieved significant milestones in my marathon journey, setting personal records across various distances, qualifying for the Boston Marathon, and winning 21K races in Milwaukee. My goal is to complete the six major marathons—I’ve already run five (NY, Chicago, Berlin, Boston, and London) and eagerly anticipate running Tokyo next year.

Reflecting on my experience as a marathon runner, I've gained a wealth of insights that extend far beyond the track. Before a race, I spend months preparing and practicing for the event. Similarly, as a senior digital marketing manager, I benefit from setting quarterly objectives and breaking them down into smaller goals in the workplace. Consistent preparation and practice help build skills and resilience, making me a better leader for my team.

Making Waves: Juanjo on Diving in for ALS Awareness

"Just as in a swim or marathon, I believe in fostering a collaborative environment in the workplace and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth."

For as long as I can remember, sport has been my escape. Participating in sports fuels, focuses, and fulfills me, and it's about much more than the physical; it enhances my emotional and mental wellbeing.

I'm an avid runner and have participated in two marathons. Yet swimming has my heart—being in the water simultaneously calms and energizes me.

Earlier this year, I took on one of my biggest challenges: a grueling 23km open-water swim. This challenge wasn't about coming first but raising money for ALS—my best friend's aunt has the condition, so it was personal for me.

I can't lie; training for a 23km swim is tough! It requires dedication and perseverance. To prepare, I increased my weekly swimming hours and gritted my teeth, motivated by the cause, my teammates, and the exhilaration of achieving something I hadn't before.

On the day itself, the weather was kind to us. It was sunny, and the sea was calm. I remember diving in and my body cutting through the waves. Each stroke was decisive, each breath a rhythm I naturally fell into. The sea seemed to welcome us, and our team worked excellently together. The event raised €146,051, with the camaraderie throughout the swim palatable—we were all in this together, doing it for a purpose.

After the event, I knew I wanted to push myself even further. I signed up for a half-Ironman in May 2025— a challenge that will test my endurance, strength, and spirit in new ways. Beyond that, I'm committed to completing a full Ironman in 2026, a goal that both excites and humbles me.

I have taken the lessons I have learned into my personal life and work. Just as in a swim or marathon, I believe in fostering a collaborative environment in the workplace and embracing challenges as opportunities for growth. I emphasize the importance of mutual support and encouragement among my team members and look to build a strong team spirit. When faced with obstacles, I draw on my experience of perseverance and resilience gained in my athletic pursuits, taking on challenges with a positive mindset and a determination to find solutions.

I am truly grateful for the influence that sports have had on my life and for making me the person I am today.
