3 Trends
The first trend is actually an external phenomenon that we’ve seen across the last few decades, which is essentially a growing diversification of the human society as a whole, all around the globe.
We are moving away from a structure of clear majority and minority groups towards a mixed composition of many diverse groups. For example, we see that in North America, within just a few years, there is not going to be any clear ethnic or majority group. In Europe, we see that the generational balance is changing, due to the fact that society is becoming older. At Teva Pharmaceuticals, to be able to meet the needs of a very diverse patient base we need to make sure that our workforce composition reflects the diversity of the society we serve.
I truly believe that every human being has the fundamental right to get hired based on their skills and their abilities, to fulfil their professional potential and to be accepted and respected in the workplace. That means we also need to build a unique skillset that enables a truly inclusive work environment for all our people.
We know that diverse companies outperform their homogeneous peers. But actually, the key success factor to be able to leverage diverse folks into business success is inclusivity, focusing on inclusion as the core enabler of being successful in our diversification efforts.
At Teva, we’re focusing on three specific skills. The first one is self-awareness, better understanding our own attitudes and behaviors and how they impact people we work with. The second is the ability to analyze different situations from many perspectives, and not only from our own point of view. The third skill is the ability to adjust and personalize ways of working and communication to the specific needs and characteristics of the people you work with.
All the above is happening in the wider social context of a growing connection between business activity and social values. Looking across the globe, we see that in many regions there are a lot of complexities and political clashes. Alongside that, in companies, we see a growing understanding of the importance of social values to business prosperity.
Teva offers a very wide program of access to medicine for people around the world, and many other external social responsibility initiatives. Internally, we practice this connection through our inclusion and diversity initiatives, and across many areas of business. But of course, there is much more work to do, and my team and I are really looking forward to taking our I&D efforts many steps forward.
